WSET Level 3 Award in Wines – Sommelier Certification

Wine Tasting Mallorca: Exploring Local and European Wines

In order to continue serving our clients in the best possible way, it is essential that our knowledge is also extensive and up-to-date. Apart from Wine Tasting Mallorca tasting local wines, booking a Spanish or European tasting is possible. Besides the fact that we really enjoy this, it is also interesting for our clients to see where Mallorcan wines stand compared to wines from Bierzo, Toro, or Rueda. Or how does a Chardonnay from California compare with a Spanish one from Somontano? Fortunately, WSET has the solution for that: namely, the WSET level 3 course.

WSET3 Course Experience at Bodega Muga, Rioja

Last week, Marloes and I attended the WSET3 course in the Rioja at Bodega Muga taught by the Academy of Vintageclas. The Academy is run by Jeni Wilson DipWSET, born in Australia with roots in Scotland, and she has more than 20 years of experience teaching around the world. Jeni has been teaching English in countries such as Australia, Thailand, Mexico, and the UK since 1997. She studied oenology and viticulture in Aranda de Duero in 2003 to open Vintage Class in 2004. Jeni believes classes should be dynamic, fun, and cognitive.

Dynamic and Fun Learning with Jeni Wilson DipWSET

In the two (of the total 4 days) she taught us how to systematically taste a wine, how wine is made, and what the differences are per country and area. And what factors a winemaker himself has to influence the final product. When you have that knowledge, you experience a glass of wine differently than just more: Tasty! 😉

Mastering Wine Knowledge with Frank Smulders, Master of Wine

For the other two days, we were taught by Frank Smulders, and Frank is one of 414 people worldwide entitled to hold the title ‘Master of Wine’. With his knowledge, experience, and clear explanations, we learned much about France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Austria in two days. If you want to know more about the Institute Master of Wine, please visit their site.

WSET3 Assessment

So we were taught intensively for 4 days in a small setting before taking the exam on Sunday. This one was quite tough (thankfully because you don’t get the diploma overnight), but we are both hopeful. Also in our class were Nataliia, from Vinos de la Luz, and Neza, a winemaker at Bodega Aiurri. Incredibly interesting to spar with them about what personal elements they try to bring to their own wines.

Engaging with Wine Enthusiasts and Winemakers

If you are interested in taking this course as an enthusiast or for your profession, we can definitely recommend it! And as a customer at future tastings, we can tell you even more about the origin of the wine from our beautiful island of Mallorca!
